Originating in South India, Bharatha Natyam is one of the oldest, most stylized Indian dances. It is an ancient temple dance that has been transformed to stage art, handed down from gurus to their chelas (disciples). Dancers rigorously train to become accomplished at perfecting the physicality, emotional at perfecting the physicality, emotional expression and dramatic intent. Dancers tell stories of Hindu Gods and heroes through hand movements (mudras) and facial expressions (bhava). Over the years the form has evolved, but has preserved its original flavor and essence.
